Why did you choose RU, ISSE course?

I have been interested in science and math since I was in high school. I was also looking for a university to study deeper of this field. Fortunately, Ritsumeikan university came for an information session to my high school. The University seemed attractive because they not only teach theory but also offer group projects in which students can learn how to cooperate. Moreover, Japan is not far from Korea with a similar culture. Therefore, I thought this course would be great due to my interest and future opportunities.

How did you find out about RU, ISSE Course?

In my high school, lots of students apply and choose universities overseas. I also searched for universities overseas. I was interested in universities in Japan, so I started to spend time researching about English-taught courses in Japan and its admissions requirements. I found out Ritsumeikan University launched a new science-based course in English. This is is how I found the university. I also found out that the university was going to visit my high school. After the visit, I decided to apply for Ritsumeikan University.

ISSE course is based in Biwako Kusatsu Campus, Shiga*. How did this affect your choice of coming to Kansai from all over Japan?

The biggest reason for choosing ISSE course at Biwako-Kusatsu Campus Shiga were the program features. Since I was a high school student, math and science were my favorite subjects and economics and social science are my least favorite. Another reason was the location of the campus. I prefer a quiet place than a crowded place. At the same time, I used to spend my free time hanging out with my friends, so I wanted to live  in a place where it is quiet and relaxing with good access to city life. Shiga is a perfect fit for these conditions. It only takes 20~30 minutes to go to Kyoto and less than 1 hour to Osaka. Therefore, Shiga is the perfect place for me.

What do you think are the differences between a university in Korea and RU?

I have never entered a Korean University, but some of my friends have.  From what I hear, they don't have many presentations and group work, but in ISSE students have many opportunities. Last semester, I had 4 group projects except for my liberal arts classes. All the classes I took (except some theory classes) had at least 1 presentation. In total, I delivered 7 presentations in one semester. Also, the quality of my classmates' presentation are higher than I thought. As a result, I could learn how to present without nervousness in front of many people and make practical and clear Powerpoint Presentation (PPT) slides.

Can you describe your class choices for the previous semester?

Last semester I had three liberal arts classes aimed for graduation, four theory classes, and five exercises and team project classes. In the programming language classes, I learnt Java, Python, and C languages. The basic languages are taught in the first and second year, and now professors give more advanced exercises.

How are your relationships with your classmates and lab members?

As my course requires lots of teamwork, all the students in the ISSE course know each other and don't hesitate to discuss. Therefore, even if we have random group members, it doesn't matter who is in the group. Now, I have three members in the lab. We made a group chat and discuss ideas, ask and answer the questions. If one member has a problem doing his or her work, others give advice or try to solve it together. After the classes, I sometimes go to Kyoto with friends or have dinner together. Moreover, I went to a friend's house and made food during the vacations.

Have you lived in a university dorm?

I lived in the BKC I-house when I was a freshman. In the dorm, there were lots of ISSE students, other courses students, and exchange students from various countries. It was a good chance to make new friends because the dorm has common kitchens on each floor and also a free space for chilling or studying.

Tell us about your favorite spot on campus.

The ISSE students have two labs in the CC (Creation Core) building, and it is my favorite place in the university. We can study or spend time freely without restrictions. I used to do the group project or study before the final exams in the lab. Also, the building is close to the convenience store so that I can grab a snack easily.

Have you had any difficulties when you started a new life here?

For international students, especially ISSE students, the beginning is not so easy because of the language. Generally, the international center at the university tries to help international students, but sometimes we need to handle things by ourselves. When I moved out from the I-House to my own place nearby the campus, I needed to go to the city hall for a move-in and out report, and I couldn't speak Japanese fluently. That was the hardest moment of my life in Japan. However, some employees of the real estate agency can speak English and I used a translator, and overall, I managed most of the time with no hassles.

Students love staying up late at night. How do you balance your study and evening entertainment?

I used to go to bed at 4 am last year. I also hang out with my friends a lot, but I finished given assignments before I went out. Firstly, when I had homework, I listed on my Mac with the due date and brief information to not forget it. The best time to do assignments or sleep is between the lectures. Usually, I had 2~3 hours of free time at the university. In the ISSE lab, I started the homework with friends or had a short nap.

What do you miss from Korea? How do you beat homesick?

I have never felt lonely because I am not in Korea with family or friends, but sometimes I miss Korean food. I love spicy foods in Korea, but it is hard to find real spicy foods in Japan. There are some Korean restaurants near my house but not the food that I want. Also, it is a little bit expensive to buy Korean products on the internet. The solution I found was to find another restaurant in Kyoto and make meals for myself. If anyone needs spicy Korean food, I can help with that.
